mclcreate Deliver ‘Best In Class’ Events For Rugby School’s 450th Anniversary

Sunday, 25 June 2017 Rugby School, Warwickshire

Founded in 1567, the prestigious Rugby School in Warwickshire is one of the oldest independent schools in Britain and the birthplace of the worldwide phenomenon and treasured sport that is rugby. 2017 brought with it the need for a variety of events for both the School and the whole Rugbeian community, to celebrate the important 450th anniversary of Rugby School.

Rugby School had planned a number of events to suitably mark this impressive milestone and following a recommendation, approached live events specialist, mclcreate, to support them with production and technical expertise. This relationship over a six month period culminated with a week of spectacular, memorable and engaging events which included a Film Premiere and Gala Dinner for 550 guests, top level performances for up to 1000 attendees to the Festival on the Close and a final Leavers’ Ball.

An Education on Rugby School
mclcreate was first tasked to support the School’s official anniversary launch and exhibition event which took place in the School’s Collingwood centre in January. This event also saw the launch of The Global Pass, which sent a tracked rugby ball around the world.

This was followed in March by an International U18 Rugby Sevens Tournament. Rugby School was the first school to stage such a tournament, and with teams from Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan as well as the Home Nations, the online stream of the event was viewed by more than 300,000 worldwide. Through the technical support and production for these initial events, mclcreate was able to construct a detailed understanding of the School’s key motivations and preferences in preparation for the challenging series of events in June.

A Gala Ball at Rugby School
The 450th Anniversary Film Premiere and Gala Ball took place on June 24 at the School, bringing together the Rugbeian community of parents, staff and suppliers. The Film Premiere projected onto a large screen in the Temple Speech Room included first performances of both the 450th Overture and Anthem, exclusively commissioned to celebrate the Anniversary, and the Gala Dinner which took place in a structure created by De Boer demanded a very special combination of lighting, staging and sound reproduction to create the desired atmosphere.

Denise Osborne, 450th Anniversary Events Manager, commented: “mclcreate succeeded in creating a magical atmosphere within the marque, delivering and coordinating everything to provide the perfect platform for a truly astounding event.”

“As Rugby School sets impeccable standards, we took great care to ensure every element of the event had been thoroughly assessed and evaluated and that we had the very best equipment and people to ensure faultless results,” said Lorna Hughes, Business Development Manager at Mclcreate.

The Final Score – The Festival on the Close
The Festival on the Close, which took place from June 25-29 of June, was open to the public, inviting the community to join in the celebration of this historic School. mclcreate produced all staging, lighting, sound, AV and rigging for the event which included not only an impressive line-up of headline acts such as Stomp and Laura Mvula, but also over 200 creative workshops for Rugby School pupils and Primary school children. With flamenco dance lessons and creative writing, to sculpture and live sports commentary as well as unique experiences such as performing with Stomp and singing with G4, The Festival on the Close established itself as one of the most ambitious and exciting educational art festivals in the country.

Tackling the Leavers Ball
The expertise of mclcreate was once again required to produce the 2017 Leavers Ball, taking a similar format to the Anniversary Gala Ball. The ball featured a three course dinner with various presentations and entertainment taking place in the same Grand Marquee.

A Celebration in another League
The series of events for Rugby School proved a triumph for both mclcreate and Rugby School. Peter Berners-Price, Chairman of the 450th Anniversary for the School commented: “We set ourselves some ambitious creative targets and mclcreate certainly helped us to achieve results beyond our expectations. They provided a well informed and practical approach to all our event requirements, and their professional industry knowledge coupled with sound organisation and creative vision enabled us to present some truly superb events. Events tend to ‘evolve’, so perhaps more than anything, we appreciated their ability to listen to our changing requirements and then respond accurately and promptly to them. We also appreciated their transparent approach to costs, and flexibility in arriving at acceptable budget solutions. We would be very happy to recommend mclcreate to anyone who may consider using their services.”
