Projection master class stuns Edinburgh International Festival

Tuesday, 09 August 2016 Edinburgh Castle

The 2016 Edinburgh International Festival launched on Sunday evening with a spectacular event at Edinburgh castle combining animation, lighting and sound. The Standard Life Opening Event, named Deep Time, celebrated the unique geological history of Edinburgh, using the western side of the castle as the canvas for the stunning video projected narrative. mclcreate partnered with Blue-i Theatre Technology to provide additional projectors and crucial technical support for the event.

A capacity audience of 27,000 people gathered on Castle Terrace in the centre of Edinburgh to watch Edinburgh castle transform right in front of their eyes thanks to the cutting edge video projection work incorporating 42 projectors, 160 hours of pre-production and programming, and over 840,000 lumens of light output.

Created by 59 Productions, Standard Life: Deep Time animation explored Edinburgh’s 350 million years of history. Inspired by the work of the Geologist Thomas Hutton, the free event signalled the beginning of the 2016 Edinburgh International Festival.

Enthralling the sell-out crowd, the 18 minute spectacle was sound tracked by Scottish rock band Mogwai, who produced a unique recording to accompany the event.

Ross Blair, Operations Manager at mclcreate, comments: “This was a fantastic project to be involved with. Everybody that was lucky enough to attend was able to see the culmination of planning, coordination and hard work between Blue-i Theatre Technology, 59 Productions and mclcreate.”

Each year the Edinburgh International Festival welcomes the most exciting cultural performers from the around the world across dance, art, music and theatre.

“Projection is a powerful tool for engagement at these type of events,“ comments Ed Cooper, Blue-i Theatre Technology. “Working alongside mclcreate has allowed us to effectively support this show stopping display at the iconic Edinburgh Castle.”
