Edinburgh International Conference Centre
The Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival (GEITF) is a key event on the TV industry calendar held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC). The trade show draws in thousands of professionals from the sector, from freelancers to presenters to high-ranking TV executives.
Skype, the voice-over-IP and instant messaging platform, was a major sponsor of the festival. The client wanted to create a centrepiece area where delegates would be welcomed and entertained, as well as somewhere for them to meet and relax.
mclcreate produced, installed and managed the Skype Lounge, a 100 square metre enclave at the heart of the festival’s welcome hall. Fully Skype-branded and featuring 65” plasma screens, the lounge provided a focal point and a gallery for showcasing the client’s communication technology.
High definition screens featured video clips highlighting Skype HD’s use as a conferencing tool by many high-profile television shows. Live Q&A expert panels were conducted, while a voice-activated feature wall and rows of Microsoft Surface Pro tablets both added flair and wow factor.
mclcreate staff were on hand throughout the 4-day period to support and assist Skype, as well as to maintain the smooth running of the installation’s operational and technical aspects.
In line with the aim of building a welcoming and relaxed space, a smoothie bar was created, encouraging passers-by to come in and enjoy a refreshing drink within the area. Bespoke illuminated furniture added a touch of excitement and exclusivity.
In a piece of light entertainment, guests were invited to connect via Skype with a magician hundreds of miles away in London. His ability to carry out card tricks and interact with visitors in Edinburgh perfectly illustrated the capabilities of the client’s product.
