Wee dram on the web
The world renowned Glenfiddich distillery is famous for its single malt Scotch whisky. In June, it had the idea of live streaming a Scotch tasting from a warehouse at the distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, across dozens of locations in the United States, with attendees sampling the drams while they watched. To do this, they enlisted the help of live communications company mclcreate to make sure the live streaming went smoothly.
mclcreate provided the complete infrastructure to support the event, including the cameras, lighting, microphones, webcasting equipment and broadcast software. The team was on hand for two sessions, the pre-event technical run through and the evening event for US clients.
Image and sound quality was of the upmost importance to ensure customers received a crystal clear experience thousands of miles away. However, livestreaming from a distillery in the north of Scotland presented some notable challenges. The warehouse did not have its own internet access, the lighting was very low, acoustics were tricky and there were no power outlets. Adding to the complexity was the fact that the setup and stream were happening during a severe wind and rain storm.
mclcreate arrived the day before the event to set up all the equipment from a base location elsewhere at the distillery. A huge number of cables had to be run into the warehouse, and each one tested and secured. The mclcreate team were successful in getting everything up and running despite the challenges faced.
In the warehouse, mclcreate set up multiple cameras and lighting, including a camera up at the top of a high Solera vat. The team worked to get the staging and angles right, as well as the sound. Maintaining constant contact with the client, they set up the live stream, which in the end sampled nearly 1500 consumers, leaving the partners extremely pleased and looking forward to future events with mclcreate.
